Please note that I do not consider online or offline or singleplayer or multiplayer a different genre. Neither the way in which gamecharacters or motion is controlled. Wheter it be mouse, keyboard, a Wii controller or a phone, the way of controlling a game does not determine the genre in my opinion.
Please respond to this article and challenge the segmentation I have made.

I seem to be missing 2 genres here. Shoot-em ups, one of the founding genres of the arcadegaming boom, for example Asteroids, R-Type, Defender, Starfox.

There's even the genre of adult games (virtual strippers, strippoker, perhaps even Luisere Suit Larry although the later ones are more adventure orientated). Used to be more prolific but nonetheless a genre. For laughs check out Custers Revenge for the atari 2600 :)

Thanks for you comment Maarten. I think 'shoot em ups' could be considered either 'Shooters' (I will leave out '1st person' - as Fallout 3 is playable in 3rd and 1st person perspective) or platform? And edutcational games are a different league, since they are not necessarily played 'voluntary' which is one of the key words in my most recent definition of the word game. As for adult games - unfortunately has never been a succes so far ;-)

where you walk through a level fighting.
while fighting games are more 1 on 1 combatgames.

Deze komen redelijk overeen met die van jou maar ik mis alleen gokgames als categorie. Dat wordt natuurlijk erg veel gespeeld online.

ReplyDeleteEerst en vooral: hail to al wie hierboven het genre van de Street Fighters en de Mortal Kombat's opnieuw Beat 'em up gaat noemen. Ik heb de afschuwelijke "fighting game' trend bij OPM jaren proberen te stoppen, maar zonder succes.
Verder leerde mijn ervaring dat Shoot 'em up het publiek veel richting FPS deed denken, dus werden die games alsmaar meer 'action' games genoemd. Wat hier in de lijst als action staat, zou ik dan weer onder Action/advenure zetten.
...afgezien van Resident Evil, want dat is dan weer "survival horror". Ook al heeft de laatste RE nog weinig survival en horror maar alleen maar actie en cheap thrills (tot zover mijn korte mening over de teloorgang van de RE reeks)
Adventure games kan - mits je dan echt wil teruggrijpen naar die goeie ouwe tijd - ook gewoon weer point & click adventures gaan noemen.
